A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is the surgical removal of loose skin on the abdomen. It may also include muscle repair for diastasis recti. During his 20+ year career as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Hakim Said has helped hundreds of Seattle tummy tuck patients have the flat, smooth looks they desire after weight loss or pregnancy.
Despite your healthy lifestyle, working out and eating well, the stubborn fat, distended muscles, and sagging skin on the lower half of your belly just won’t go back to how things were. This is not your fault. As we age, our skin loses elasticity. If you have experienced a major body transformation, such as weight loss, weight gain, or childbirth, your skin may not have the elasticity necessary to shrink back to the way it was before the transformation on its own. Fortunately, an abdominoplasty can help.
Done properly, a tummy tuck can give you tighter skin, more defined abdominal muscles, and a more sculpted appearance. Tummy tucks can also help with some medical problems, including back pain, some urinary problems, and ventral hernias. As Dr. Said explains to his patients “the upper abdomen is the patient’s job. The lower abdomen is the plastic surgeon’s job.” While there is very little a surgeon can do about internal fat around your stomach and inner organs, your efforts at weight loss can make a huge difference in the fullness of your upper abdomen. On the other hand, all your efforts at losing weight just make the lower abdomen sag even more as you shed pounds. Fortunately that is where your plastic surgeon can help remove skin and fat and restore a shape you can feel great about. At Said Plastic Surgery, we strive to deliver the best Tummy Tuck Seattle has to offer!

At your consultation for a tummy tuck Seattle plastic surgeon Dr. Hakim Said meets with you to discuss the parts of your abdomen that bother you.
Perhaps you have sagging skin, muscle separation, stretch marks, hanging skin after a c-section, or a combination of problems to address. Dr. Said has deep experience in complex abdominal repairs; no matter which goals you have in mind, he can create a custom surgical plan just for you. Dr. Said will take the time to listen to your wishes and answer all your questions. Your concerns are the most important way to know if you are a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery.
If you have excess fat on the upper abdomen, he may suggest weight loss to prepare you for surgery. Liposuction may also be useful in addition to your tummy tuck. This can provide better abdominal definition, can reduce belly fat, and can correct wider areas without the need for longer scars. Once you have a personalized tummy tuck plan, the next step is meeting with a staff member to learn about costs. When you are ready to move forward with surgery, you can select a surgery date that fits your schedule.
Please follow all pre-operative instructions. On the day of surgery, Dr. Said will go over any last-minute questions and you will be prepped for surgery. During your procedure, Dr. Said will make a horizontal incision on the lower abdomen.
Liposuction may be used to dissect or remove unwanted tissues in some cases. The skin is pulled downward and excess skin is removed to give you a smooth, tight shape. The surgery takes three to five hours, depending on what needs to be corrected. In a full tummy, the muscles of the stomach are brought together as well. Techniques may vary based on your individual tummy tuck plan. For example, a mini tummy tuck may not address the muscles or upper abdomen. Dr. Said is experienced with many tummy tuck techniques and will go over the pros and cons of each with you during your consultation.
Every tummy tuck is different. The recovery time depends on the extent of surgery. Dr. Said will advise you to take anywhere from one to six weeks before returning to normal daily activities, depending on the type of tummy tuck you decide is right for you.
A mini tummy tuck has a shorter recovery time of one to two weeks. You may resume driving in approximately 7 to 10 days. A full tummy tuck may require two to four weeks without driving. You may be asked to take two to six weeks off work. Extended tummy tucks are even more involved and have a slightly longer downtime. Driving may be resumed when you feel confident that you have a full range of motion. Please avoid heavy lifting for the first six weeks. It is best to wait at least six to eight weeks before resuming high-impact exercise.
Do not engage in intensive workout programs and core exercise in the first three months of recovery. The first three days of recovery are the most difficult. Short walks around your home are recommended, starting on the day of surgery. This is done to prevent blood clots in your legs. Dr. Said will provide all Seattle tummy tuck patients with comprehensive recovery instructions. Following those instructions is important to reduce the risk of complications following surgery.

The fat cells that are removed from the abdomen are gone permanently and cannot grow back. In addition, internal sutures that may be placed during this procedure will remain permanently. Thus, in most cases, the results of tummy tucks are permanent. However, future weight gain of around 15 pounds or more could cause surrounding areas to gain weight or the stomach muscles and skin to stretch.
Since a tummy tuck is a major surgery that involves the abdominal muscle wall, there can be fairly significant discomfort or pain in the first week after surgery. Since a mini tummy tuck is less invasive, the pain levels will be lower and shorter. In most cases, pain can be easily managed with painkillers and subsides greatly by the second week post-surgery.
The size reduction after a tummy tuck depends on how much fat and tissue can safely be removed for each particular patient. Many of our Seattle tummy tuck patients do see a reduction of several inches off their waistline, multiple pant sizes, or two to three dress sizes. Keep in mind, tummy tuck is not a procedure meant to be used for weight loss in general; it is an abdominal contouring method.
Scars after this procedure are inevitable, but with a skilled surgeon, they will be as discreet as possible and hidden enough to not be seen even while wearing most bikinis. If scars are still more visible than desired, certain laser procedures or topical ointments may be able to further reduce the appearance.
It’s important to remember that recovery will vary depending on the patient and the extent of the surgery; no two patients will have the same recovery. In general, the first three days are typically the most challenging. You will need to be prepared to rest but also move just enough to prevent blood clots or other post-surgical complications.
